Frequently asked questions

What is an animal rescue?

Animal rescues pull animals from shelters or take them in directly and place them in foster homes until adoption. Many have no public building and adopt by appointment.

How many animal rescues are in the United States?

We list 2,928 animal rescues in the United States. Listed when the source classifies the organization as an animal rescue or the official name says rescue.

Why might an organization be missing from this list?

We only list an organization here when the source data, the official name or a verified correction confirms it. If you know one that belongs on this page, open its listing and use "Suggest a correction", or add it through our submission form.

How does adopting work?

Start on the shelter's or rescue's own website: most post their adoptable animals there and on Petfinder or Adopt-a-Pet. Visit or call to meet an animal, then fill in an adoption application. Expect to show a photo ID, and if you rent, proof that your landlord allows pets. The adoption fee usually covers spay or neuter surgery, first vaccinations and a microchip. Fees vary by organization and by animal, so ask the shelter directly.
