Frequently asked questions

What is a bird rescue?

Bird rescues care for parrots and other companion birds, which can live for decades and often need a new home after their owner can no longer keep them.

How many bird rescues are in the United States?

We list 81 bird rescues in the United States. Listed when the official name names the animal or the source record says which animals the organization takes in. Shelters that take in all animals are not listed here unless they say so.

Why might an organization be missing from this list?

We only list an organization here when the source data, the official name or a verified correction confirms it. If you know one that belongs on this page, open its listing and use "Suggest a correction", or add it through our submission form.

How does adopting work?

Start on the shelter's or rescue's own website: most post their adoptable animals there and on Petfinder or Adopt-a-Pet. Visit or call to meet an animal, then fill in an adoption application. Expect to show a photo ID, and if you rent, proof that your landlord allows pets. The adoption fee usually covers spay or neuter surgery, first vaccinations and a microchip. Fees vary by organization and by animal, so ask the shelter directly.
