Dog Rescues and Shelters in California

These organizations focus on dogs, from breed-specific rescues to shelters that take in only dogs.

We list 85 dog rescues and shelters in California. Listed when the official name names the animal or the source record says which animals the organization takes in. Shelters that take in all animals are not listed here unless they say so.

We only list an organization here when the source data, the official name or a verified correction confirms it. If you know one that belongs on this page, open its listing and use "Suggest a correction", or add it through our submission form.

Start on the shelter's or rescue's own website: most post their adoptable animals there and on Petfinder or Adopt-a-Pet. Visit or call to meet an animal, then fill in an adoption application. Expect to show a photo ID, and if you rent, proof that your landlord allows pets. The adoption fee usually covers spay or neuter surgery, first vaccinations and a microchip. Fees vary by organization and by animal, so ask the shelter directly.
